Los Angeles Galaxy and El Salvador's Metapan claimed the last two quarterfinal places in the CONCACAF Champions League with victories on Thursday.

The Galaxy won 1-0 at Costa Rica's Motagua in Group A, and, in Group B, Metapan defeated Honduran team Real Espana 3-2, moving up to second in the group at the expense of Colorado Rapids.

Mexican teams Pumas, Morelia, Monterrey and Santos Laguna and MLS teams Toronto and Seattle Sounders are the other quarterfinalists.

Juninho scored what proved the winner for Los Angeles with a dipping shot from 30 meters in the 29th minute.

Motagua'ss best chance of the first half came when Galaxy keeper Josh Saunders parried a long range shot into the path of Motagua's Jerry Bengston in the 38th, but, with no-one guarding the goal, he headed wide from a tight angle.

The second half produced few good chances until Landon Donovan shot over the bar in the 89th minute with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Morelia finished top of Group A, the Galaxy second, with Costa Rica's Alajuelense unlucky to be eliminated in third; all three ended on 12 points. Motagua lost all its six games.

In Group B, Uruguayan Paolo Saurez, brother of Liverpool striker Luis, opened the scoring for Metapan in the 50th, before Edder Delgado equalized for Real Espana six minutes later.

A Ramon Sanchez left-footed free kick from just outside the penalty area made it 2-1 to Metapan in the 68th, and the Salvadoran team extended its lead in the 82nd, with Suarez getting his second.

Maynor Martinez pulled a goal back in stoppage time but it was too late for Real Espana, and Metapan became the first team from El Salvador to reach the quarterfinals of the regional competition.

Group B finished with Santos Laguna on 13 points, Metapan on nine, Colorado on seven and Real Espana on five points.

The two-legged quarterfinals will be played in early March.
