Galatasaray questioned in match-fixing
One of Galatasaray's top officials has been assisting police with an inquiry into alleged match-fixing.
Galatasaray spokesman Sedat Dogan said Thursday that club official Bulent Tulun was helping police with their queries. His statement came after news reports said police were searching club premises.
More than 30 people have been charged in the probe that involves 19 games last season and has implicated league champion Fenerbahce as well as Besiktas and Trabzonspor. Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim has been jailed and the club faces relegation and the threat of losing its league title.
The Turkish Football Federation pushed back the start of the season for more than a month until Sept. 9 because of the probe.
Hurriyet newspaper and other media said prosecutors were also scrutinizing the 2005-06 season, which Galatasaray won following a 1-1 draw between Fenerbahce and Denizlispor in the last game. They did not cite a source for the report.
