Paris Saint-Germain won 2-0 away at Toulouse and moved up to third place in the French league on Saturday.

PSG rarely looked troubled in defense and coach Antoine Kombouare's team has not conceded a goal in any competition for seven consecutive games since losing 3-1 away to Sochaux on Aug. 29.

Earlier, France striker Loic Remy scored as defending champion Marseille beat Nancy 1-0 to move into fourth place behind bitter rival PSG. Both have 15 points from nine games after overcoming difficult starts to the season.

"We're really enjoying ourselves and you can see it out on the pitch. There's a lot of competition for places and that's a healthy thing," PSG winger Ludovic Giuly said. "But it's early in the season and we won't get carried away."

PSG and Marseille are two points behind second-place Saint-Etienne and three behind leader Rennes - who have both played a game less and are featuring in Sunday's games.

"We can't say it's our best game of the season, but we've played better and not won," Marseille coach Didier Deschamps said. "We were lacking in movement, aggression, speed and passing. It wasn't a good game but we had to win. We're slowly starting to make up for our slow start to the season, when we lost our opening two games."

PSG took the lead in the 11th minute when Brazilian playmaker Nene's free kick from the left was poorly cleared by the Toulouse defense. The loose ball fell to defender Mamadou Sakho, and he coolly beat goalkeeper Matthieu Valverde with a shot into the bottom corner for his second goal of the season.

PSG almost doubled its lead moments later when Giuly's volley from 20 yards (meters) was well saved by Valverde.

Giuly was in fine form and he swapped passes with Nene to set up Mevlut Erding for the second goal in the 57th. It was the Turkey forward's first goal since Aug. 7 after 11 games without scoring.

Valverde then kept out another effort from Giuly as PSG charged forward.

Toulouse hardly threatened until late on, when PSG goalkeeper Apoula Edel made an athletic save to keep out Paulo Machado's powerfully struck free kick.

A week after scoring his first goal for France in a European Championship qualifier against Romania, Remy finished from close range in the 27th minute to get his first for Marseille since joining from Nice this summer.

Elsewhere, Auxerre coach Jean Fernandez's 500th career game coaching in French football ended in a 1-0 home defeat to Bordeaux. Striker Anthony Modeste scored the winner to help Jean Tigana's improving team up to seventh place with 14 points.

Fernandez is still a long way from Guy Roux's French record of coaching 894 games - almost all of them with Auxerre.

"I still have the same desire and passion," Fernandez said. "But it will be hard to beat Guy's record."

Montpellier beat Sochaux 2-0 with Mapou Yangambiwa and Younes Belhanda getting a goal each in the first half.

In Saturday's other games, Caen drew 0-0 at home to Monaco, and last-place Arles got its first point of the campaign following eight straight defeats when it drew 0-0 at Brest.

"It's our first point of the season, that's huge. It means more than just a point for us," Arles coach Faruk Hadzibegic said. "We will take heart from that, but the road is long."

Rennes is playing away to struggling Lens, while Lyon takes on Lille on Sunday. In other games, Nice hosts Saint-Etienne and Lorient faces Valenciennes.
