French Ligue One Roundup, Aug. 28
Midfielders Etienne Capoue and Franck Tabanou scored second-half goals as French league leader Toulouse won 2-0 at Nancy to maintain its perfect start to the new season with a fourth straight win.
Capoue opened the scoring in the 68th minute when he collected the ball some 20 yards out, beat defender Jordan Loties and then advanced into the penalty area, and curled the ball past goalkeeper Gennaro Bracigliano.
Tabanou wrapped up the win deep into injury time, moments after hitting the post with another effort.
The win means Toulouse is guaranteed to stay top this weekend as it has 12 points.
Elsewhere, seven-time champion Lyon lost 2-0 at Lorient and Saint-Etienne winger Dimitri Payet scored a hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Lens.
Caen lost 2-0 at home to Brest in Saturday's late game and relinquished second place, dropping down to fifth.
Rennes is now in second place with eight points after winning 1-0 at Arles-Avignon, leading third-place Montpellier - which won 1-0 at Valenciennes - only on goal difference.
Saint-Etienne climbed up to fourth spot with seven points, and narrowly leads Caen on goal difference.
Brest, promoted last season, got its first win this term.
Striker Nolan Roux opened the scoring when he buried Tomas Micola's cross with a shot into the top corner in the 75th, and just three minutes later Mario Licka doubled the advantage from the penalty spot.
On Sunday, defending champion Marseille travels to play Bordeaux with new strikers Andre-Pierre Gignac and Loic Remy likely to be involved.
At Lorient, France playmaker Yoann Gourcuff's much publicized debut for his new club Lyon got off to a bad start.
Lyon coach Claude Puel started the match with Gourcuff on the bench after he joined from Bordeaux this week in a deal that could eventually rise up to 26.5 million euros (US$33.9 million).
Gourcuff came on for Cesar Delgado with barely 30 minutes played, but was unable to turn Lyon's fortunes around after seeing his teammates fall behind in the eighth minute.
Lyon defender Jeremy Toulalan, dropped this week from the France squad for upcoming European Championship qualifiers, handled the ball and striker Kevin Gameiro, called up to France's squad for the first time, converted the penalty.
Gameiro was involved in Lorient's second goal in the 68th when his pass released Morgan Amalfitano down the right and he crossed for Lynel Kitambala, who beat Hugo Lloris at the second attempt after Lyon's goalkeeper saved his first shot.
Payet, meanwhile, continued his fine start to the season as he hopes to catch France coach Laurent Blanc's eye in a new-look France team that features several young prospects, like Gameiro.
Bakary Sako's pass found Payet on the edge of the penalty area and his powerful shot into the bottom left corner flew past goalkeeper Vedran Runje after just five minutes.
He added two late goals to take his league tally to four this season.
Montpellier still has not conceded a goal this season. Hasan Kabze's cross was headed in by Olivier Giroud in the 29th, the striker's first league goal since joining the club from Tours.
Rennes scored in the 28th when striker Victor Hugo Montano beat goalkeeper Vincent Plante from the outside the penalty area.
In Sunday's other games, it is: Lille vs. Nice; Monaco vs. Auxerre; and Sochaux vs. Paris Saint-Germain.
