Former Japan international Oku dies following car crash

Former Japan international Daisuke Oku died in a hospital on Friday after crashing his car into a roadside utility pole in Okinawa.

According to local police, the 38-year-old Oku veered into the opposite lane before slamming his car into a pole around 4:00 a.m. Friday. There were no passengers in the car.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

In June of 2013, Oku was arrested on suspicion of threatening to kill his wife but prosecutors decided not to indict him.

Oku was capped 26 times and scored twice for Japan's national team between 1998 and 2004. He played 280 games in the J-League, mostly with Jubilo Iwata and Yokohama F Marinos, scoring 62 goals. He retired in 2008.
