Adelaide United says Argentine playmaker Marcos Flores has quit the A-League club to play in China.

Flores, the reigning Johnny Warren Medalist as the A-League's best player, had signed with Chinese Super League club Henan Jianye, United said in a statement Monday.

The 25-year-old attacking midfielder asked to be released last Friday, but the club's board initially refused. He rejected the club's offer to make him its marquee player, which would have put his salary outside the league's cap.

Flores, formerly of Newell's Old Boys, joined Adelaide in 2010 and scored nine goals from 31 appearances.
