The Football Association has charged Newcastle and local rival Sunderland with misconduct following their bad-tempered 1-1 draw in the Premier League at the weekend.

The FA says the charge relates to an incident that followed Sunderland winger James McClean's late challenge on Danny Simpson.

The players were both booked for touching foreheads as they confronted each other.

The clubs have until 1600 GMT Monday to respond to the charge.
