English Premier League club Everton has signed Scotland forward Steven Naismith on a four-year deal from debt-ridden Scottish giant Rangers.

Naismith is the second player in as many days to leave Rangers on a free transfer as players cancel their contracts with the troubled club, which has entered bankruptcy protection.

Scottish Premier League clubs are set to vote on Wednesday on whether to allow Rangers, which has tax debts of 21 million pounds ($32.7 million), to stay in the league under a new company.

The chief executive of Rangers has threatened to take players and the clubs signing them to court if they don't transfer their contracts to the club's new company.
