German second-division team 1860 Munich wants former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson to join its coaching staff in the hope of gaining promotion.

The decision to seek Eriksson's help came before dawn in a meeting of Munich's management, the club said on Tuesday. Munich's Jordanian investor Hasan Ismaik insisted on bringing in the Swede, despite strong initial objections from the management.

However, Eriksson told a Swedish newspaper no deal had been signed yet.

''Most of it remains (to be worked out). I haven't even talked to the club,'' he was quoted as telling the Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet.

Eriksson, who attended Munich's matches before the season went into its winter recess, said he was aware that the club had released the news on its website.

"It feels a bit strange,'' he said.

Munich's idea is for Eriksson to sit on the bench alongside coach Alexander Schmidt, who replaced Reiner Maurer in November, although the issue of exact coaching duties still has to be decided.

''The managing director Robert Schaefer will discuss this (duties) with both over the next few days,'' club president Dieter Schneider said.

Eriksson's long career includes a five-year stint as England manager. The 64-year-old Swede has managed, among others, Fiorentina, Roma, Lazio, Benfica, Manchester City, Mexico and Ivory Coast.

1860 Munich is sixth in the second division, 17 points from first place. The division resumes this weekend.
