England coach Fabio Capello called up Matthew Upson, James Milner and Jermain Defoe for the crucial World Cup Group C match against Slovenia on Wednesday.

Upson came into central defense for the suspended Jamie Carragher, Milner returned to the lineup after missing the 0-0 draw with Algeria and Defoe took over from Emile Heskey in attack. After two draws, England needed a win to ensure it advanced or would have to rely on the result of the other match between the United States and Algeria.

Slovenia, which leads the group with four points, kept the same starting lineup from the 2-2 draw with the United States.

England and the United States each have two points and Algeria one. The United States vs. Algeria were to play at Pretoria.
