England weathered waves of Ukrainian attacks to stay even at 0-0 on Tuesday in Group D of the European Championship.
A draw would be enough to take England through to the quarterfinals, but co-host Ukraine has to win to stay in the tournament.
Ukraine controlled play for much of the half at the Donbass Arena, largely containing the English inside their own half. But with captain Andriy Shevchenko on the bench as he recovers from a knee injury, Ukraine lacked a finishing touch.
Wayne Rooney came closest for England as he returned from suspension, heading just wide from Ashley Young's cross.
