Sunderland defender John Egan has signed a one-year contract extension with the Wearside club.

The Sunderland academy product, who fractured his right leg while on loan with Bradford in November, came through the club's youth system and turned professional in 2011.

The Republic of Ireland U21 international, who is the son of the late Kerry Gaelic footballer John Egan, made his first-team debut during last summer's trip to South Korea.

The highly-rated centre-half has also enjoyed loan spells with Derby County and Crystal Palace.
