Sam Garza scored his first two professional goals and the San Jose Earthquakes staged a second-half comeback to beat the second-division Fort Lauderdale Strikers 2-1 Tuesday in a third-round U.S. Open Cup match.
Garza connected in the 63rd and 70th minutes to help the Earthquakes recover from a 1-0 halftime deficit. Mark Anderson put ahead the Strikers, a North American Soccer League club, in the 38th minute.
The Earthquakes will host the NASL's Minnesota Stars in a fourth-round match next Tuesday at Stanford's Colgan Stadium.
Garza, the No. 6 pick in this year's MLS draft, converted a pass from Simon Dawkins along the top of Fort Lauderdale's penalty area for his first goal. His second goal came when a deflected San Jose shot fell to him at 22 yards.
Anderson's hardest-hit shot, a 74th-minute attempt from 15 yards, was pushed over the crossbar by leaping goalkeeper David Bingham.
