HEERENVEEN, Netherlands (AP) Dwight Lodeweges has quit as coach of struggling Dutch club SC Heerenveen, leaving with the team 15th in the 18-team top flight.

In a video message posted on Heerenveen's website Wednesday, Lodeweges said he quit ''in the interests of the club'' so that a new leader can get the team back on track.

The team from the northern Netherlands narrowly missed out on a place in the Europa League last season but has struggled this term, winning only one of its nine league matches. The only team it has beaten is last-placed De Graafschap Doetinchem in the first match of the season.

Heerenveen appointed Foppe de Haan as interim coach. De Haan worked at Heerenveen from 1985-2004, including two long stints as coach.
