Duff gives Fulham 1-0 win over visiting Newcastle
Damien Duff scored against his former club Wednesday to give Fulham a 1-0 win over visiting Newcastle in the Premier League.
Duff struck a low shot in the 67th minute for his first league goal in almost a year, settling a close match and lifting Fulham five points clear of the relegation zone.
Players often subdue their celebrations against former teams, but Duff did not bother with such niceties after being jeered by Newcastle fans.
''I had been getting a bit of stick all night,'' Duff said. ''I didn't have the best time up there but that was my first goal of the season. It's taken a while and I'm overjoyed to get three points for the team after a difficult first half of the season.''
Newcastle's problems up front were compounded when Shola Ameobi had to be replaced in the 13th minutes because of a suspected fractured cheekbone - just two days after the club sold star forward Andy Carroll to Liverpool.
''Credit to Newcastle, they showed great spirit after a tough few days, losing their best player,'' Duff said. ''But we have played better recently and lost games, so we were due a scrappy win.''
Fulham is now up to 12th place, just a point behind 10th-place Newcastle.
