Dimitar Berbatov: Monaco wanted to win more than Arsenal
Dimitar Berbatov believes Arsenal was made to pay for a lack of desire as Monaco shocked Arsene Wenger's men in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The Bulgarian scored his side's second as the Ligue 1 side ran out a 3-1 winner in the first leg of a last-16 tie in north London to take advantage of a dismal Gunners display.
The former Manchester United and Tottenham striker feels his side simply wanted to win the game more than the home team, telling Sky Sports: "Nobody expected that probably, but we are confident in our ability, we deserved to win. We scored our chances, and it's a great win for us. Nobody expected it, [but] it's not over, we have one more game and Arsenal are still a dangerous team.
"Arsenal are a good team but today we wanted to win more than them. We were fighting all over the pitch, winning our challenges and scored the goals. Football is about goals and today we scored three and we won. For a team like Arsenal I don't think they can allow themselves to underestimate, but if they did it then it's bad for them because you can see in the pitch that we won."
Despite the healthy first-leg advantage, Berbatov has warned his side not to become complacent ahead of the second leg at Stade Louis II.
"I don't think like this because Arsenal is Arsenal, they have great players. Anything can happen, we have a comfortable lead but in football anything can happen."
Arsene Wenger has bemoaned a "horrible" night for Arsenal, criticizing his side's "suicidal" defensive performance against Monaco
"It was a horrible night but congratulations to Monaco," he told Sky Sports. "They did fight, defended very well and caught us on the break. We had both aspects wrong. We had the chances we didn't take and we were suicidal defensively. We knew at halftime it was important to keep our nerve. With the vast experience we have in this competition we knew we couldn't afford it. We are very guilty. Even at 2-1 how can we with one minute to go just leave it open the whole half."
While the Frenchman was upset at the way his club defended, he still felt the Gunner played well, but that Monaco had all the good fortune on the night.
"We controlled quite well the game," he said. "With their first shot on goal they scored. Everything went for them tonight. On top of that you see as well why Monaco has done well in the group stage. They're very well-organized and physically very strong.
"The task is massive now. The third goal makes it even more difficult. We'll have a go of course and see what we can do there. It's very, very disappointing but Champions League is down to performance on the day and when you don't perform at the level that is requested for 90 minutes you're punished. We knew before the game they absorb you and get you on the break. What happened? Exactly that."
