AMSTERDAM (AP) Dick Nanninga, a former Netherlands striker who scored in the 1978 World Cup final, has died, Dutch club Roda JC said. He was 66.
Nanninga made only 15 appearances for the Dutch national side, but he played in the 3-1 loss to Argentina in the 1978 final. Only three Netherlands teams have made it to a World Cup final, the others being in 1974 and 2010.
With the Netherlands trailing host Argentina 1-0 with eight minutes to play in Buenos Aires, Nanninga met a cross with power to level the score. The Dutch lost in extra time.
The exact cause of death was not announced Tuesday, but Nanninga had already spent months in a coma in 2012 when a lower leg had to be amputated.
