Denmark coach Morten Olsen extends deal till 2014
Denmark coach Morten Olsen changed his mind and decided to stay in the job because he realized his players have the talent to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.
Olsen hadn't plan to renew his contract which was due to expire in 2012, but said Monday that he has extended his deal through to the tournament in Brazil because he ''still sees that there is some potential'' in the team.
Denmark's coach for the past 11 years had said that the 2012 European Championship would be his last tournament if successful in qualifying.
However, his popularity grew following the Danes' success in winning six of eight games, drawing once and losing once.
Denmark's 2-1 victory over Portugal in its last qualifing game gave it the automatic Group H spot at the expense of its opponent and earned Olsen admiration from players and fans.
''When the players tap you on the shoulder and ask you to continue, one should consider it,'' Olsen told a news conference.
A poll for Danish news agency Ritzau published last week showed 57 percent of 1,000 voters said Olsen should continue after Euro 2012, with only 18 percent opposed and 25 percent having no opinion.
Olsen has coached Denmark in 123 matches with 64 wins, 32 draws and 27 losses.
Under the 62-year-old former international, Denmark has qualified for Euro 2012, two World Cups and Euro 2004.
Olsen has been coaching Denmark since 2000 and is the first Dane to reach 100 national team matches as a player and coach.
