Dempsey rescues 2-2 draw for Fulham at Aston Villa

Clint Dempsey's 10th goal of the season earned Fulham a 2-2 Premier League draw at Aston Villa on Saturday.

Villa led twice through John Pantsil's own-goal and a first ever league goal for the on-loan Kyle Walker, but Andy Johnson and then Dempsey equalized.

Villa dominated the first half with winger Stewart Downing linking up well with fullback Walker down the right but Dempsey completed the London side's comeback with a smart header from Danny Murphy's 78th-minute corner.

''We dropped two points today,'' Villa manager Gerard Houllier said. ''Had we got a second goal at 1-0 the game would have been over. But we have to be disappointed with ourselves, we have to blame ourselves.''

Fulham manager Mark Hughes, by contrast, was delighted with his side's resilience, but said he took Pantsil off shortly after halftime because he had concerns over his state of mind.

The defender has scored three own goals this season, and also put through his own net against Villa last season.

''John was disappointed at half-time. It was affecting him so I made the early decision to take him off,'' Hughes said. ''It was a difficult ball for him to deal with but he got it wrong and it can affect your confidence.

''But I was pleased with the way the team came back twice and kicked on and in the end we could have taken three points.''
