Dempsey puts Fulham into quarterfinals
Clint Dempsey scored a late winner as Fulham overturned a three-goal aggregate deficit to beat Juventus 4-1 on Thursday and reach the quarterfinals of the Europa League.
The teams were level at 4-4 overall when the United States midfielder collected the ball in the 82nd minute and turned into space on the edge of the area before beating the goalkeeper with a well-flighted chip.
"Nine times out of 10 it won't make it, but you've got to take a risk and fortunately enough it worked out tonight," Dempsey said of his goal. "We conceded early in the game but showed a lot of heart and a lot of character to fight back, and now we're through to the next round.
"I have been eight weeks out and it's great to be back playing, and to score a big goal like this is a great experience."
When David Trezeguet fired Juve into a second-minute lead and a 4-1 advantage overall, it looked all over for the west London team, which has never won a major title in English football.
But Bobby Zamora equalized in the ninth minute and, after Juventus defender Fabio Cannavaro had been sent off for hauling down a goal-bound Zoltan Gera in the 28th, the visitors fell apart in defense.
"If it had stayed 11 versus 11, I don't think Juve would have been the ones eliminated," Juventus coach Alberto Zaccheroni said.
"I was far from the (red card) action but I have seen the footage and I think the referee was a bit too strict. (Cannavaro) being sent off had an effect on the result."
Simon Davies hit the bar with a free kick and Dickson Etuhu headed against the post before Gera ended a slick Fulham move to make it 2-1 in the 39th minute.
Juve's Diego handled inside his penalty area in the 49th minute and Gera made it 3-1 from the spot to level at 4-4.
Juventus finished with nine men after defender Jonathan Zebina was sent off in injury time.
