Former Juventus and Italy striker Alessandro Del Piero didn't play in Sydney FC's A-League match against Central Coast on Saturday due to tightness in both hamstrings, and his side was badly outclassed 7-2 by the Mariners.
The Italian star failed to train during the week and Sydney made a late call not to risk Del Piero, who signed a two-year contract with the Sky Blues in early September after a 19-year career with the Serie A powerhouse.
Del Piero played with the soreness in his 800th career game last Sunday and scored for the third consecutive week.
Daniel McBreen scored three goals and Tomas Rogic two Saturday to lead the Mariners before 15,686 fans at Bluetongue Stadium on the Central Coast of New South Wales north of Sydney.
