Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido is upset by the club's Copa del Rey exit but concedes Atletico Madrid deserved to go through to the final.

The Andalusian side's hopes of adding to their cup wins in 2007 and 2010 came to an end amid a flurry of goals and red cards in two closely-fought semi-final clashes with Atletico.

Unai Emery's men were always up against it after losing 2-1 in the first leg in Madrid, and then falling 2-0 behind after 29 minutes of Wednesday night's return meeting at home following goals from Atletico strikers Diego Costa and Radamel Falcao.

Sevilla battled back to draw 2-2 on the night through goals from Jesus Navas and Ivan Rakitic but they could not make any further inroads, with their efforts badly hit by the second-half dismissals of Gary Medel and Geoffrey Kondogbia as they finished with nine men for the second match running against Atletico.

Del Nido told the Cadena SER radio station: "I'm sad and upset, because we were so close to the final. We saw a good game of football and the supporters deserve a 10 out of 10.

"(But) Atletico have been better than us. They have players up front who are real stars. In the first half they had two chances and scored two goals, and we've missed our opening chances and that made us lose confidence."

Sevilla will hope to salvage something from a season of underachievement by forcing their way into the European places in the Primera Division.

The team are currently 12th in the standings on 32 points - eight points adrift of the top six - after losing two of their last three matches.

Del Nido insists there is still all to play for, though.

He said: "We still haven't had our final say in the league. We have the squad to fight for a European position. We will continue battling."
