Defending champion Flamengo has fired coach Silas after a series of disappointing results in the Brazilian league.

Silas had led Flamengo to only one win in 10 matches, leaving Brazil's most popular club four points off relegation zone. He had taken over the job on Aug. 29.

Silas' replacement was yet to be announced, but local media says former Real Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo was the top candidate for the job. Luxemburgo was fired by Atletico Mineiro last month after failing to lift the club out of relegation zone.

Silas' dismissal, announced on the club's website on Monday, comes three days after former star Zico stepped down as Flamengo's executive director because of disagreements with other club directors.
