Joe Willis made two saves in the penalty kicks shootout, leading D.C. United past the Richmond Kickers 4-2 after a 0-0 draw Tuesday night in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup.
D.C. United hosts fellow MLS club Philadelphia Union on June 12.
United finished the game with nine men when Chris Korb earned his second yellow card and Carlos Ruiz was issued a straight red card in extra time.
