After months of ambiguity, the David Beckham stadium saga is finally reaching its finale. On Friday morning, The City of Miami and Beckham broke ground on a deal that’ll see an MLS Stadium built next to Marlins Park and the site of the old Orange Bowl.

The stadium is set to house Miami’s first MLS team since the Miami Fusion ceased operations in 2001, but there are currently no plans to include football games for the University of Miami, who had reportedly been a part of previous talks between the groups about relocating from Sun Life Stadium. One of the obstacles preventing football games at the future stadium is seat capacity. The stadium is set to house 25,000 seats, much less than the 40,000 or so needed for football games.

Helping pay for an increased seat capacity is not the only financial hurdle UM would need to clear.

Though negotiations continue between the city of Miami and UM, the green and orange have a long way to go before football returns to the heart of Miami-Dade.
