Cruyff not after president role
The board announced their resignation on Wednesday night following a disagreement with legend Cruyff on how to run the club. The directors, including chairman Uri Coronel, confirmed they would stand down at a meeting of the club's council members. The decision came less than two months after Cruyff returned to Ajax to advise on technical, financial and association issues. And while Cruyff admitted on Thursday the board's decision was not ideal - the members will stay in place until replacements are appointed - he said he has no intention of heading a team to fill the void. "I do not need to become president," he told De Telegraaf. "It's never nice when people like Uri Coronel resign as an honorary members. But that's their problem. "I have nothing to do with the organisation at the club. I was not informed in advance of this step they have taken." The 63-year-old has ruffled feathers inside the club's hierarchy since his return to the club where he won three European Cups from 1971 to 1973 as a player. Last week he publicly questioned their ability to help the club return to their past glories while he also met with them to advise that organisational and personnel changes were needed if the Amsterdammers were to get back to the top. According to reports, Cruyff also called for head coach Frank de Boer to be given a greater responsibility in the running of the club and wanted former players like Dennis Bergkamp and Wim Jonk to be given roles. Club chief executive Rik van den Boog, though, was not willing to implement all of his suggestions. The capital club have not won the Eredivisie title since 2004, while their last European success came in the Champions League in 1995. They are currently third in the Eredivisie and, after failing to get past the Champions League group stage, were knocked out in the last 16 of the Europa League by Spartak Moscow. "Something has to change. That seems clear to me," Cruyff added. "We have recently been eliminated by Real Madrid and then the Russians. "If you want to change something, you have some hard decisions. "But I do not know what will happen now." Coronel said in a press conference last night that the board had stepped aside for the benefit of the club. "It is about the importance of Ajax," he said. "Johan Cruyff is not just anyone. He's a demi-god here, or maybe a whole god."
