Poland's transport minister says he will inspect cracks in a new, ill-fated highway being built for the Euro 2012 football championship - but can't promise it will be ready on time.

Slawomir Nowak said Thursday that construction firms are obliged to repair the damage on a small stretch of the A2 highway between Warsaw and Lodz, in central Poland.

But Nowak did not promise the highway will be ready for the tournament which Poland co-hosts with Ukraine, and opens June 8 with a Poland-Greece match in Warsaw.

Poland has been constructing new stadiums, hotels and roads for the event.

The A2 highway was initially built by the Chinese COVEC consortium, but the contract was scrapped last year because of delays. Polish companies took over.
