Costa committed to play for Spain
Atletico Madrid's Brazilian-born striker Diego Costa has confirmed his intention to play for Spain.
The 24-year-old forward has spent his entire senior career in Europe, firstly in Portugal before being snapped up by Atletico in 2007.
Costa, who was the subject of a summer bid from Liverpool, has begun the season in superb form and is currently top scorer in La Liga with ten goals - equalling his previous highest ever total in a full campaign.
Now Costa is preparing to finalise the paperwork to confirm his Spanish citizenship, after which point he is expected to receive a call-up.
Costa says that they are just now awaiting confirmation from FIFA about his switch of allegiance.
"I don't get involved. What's most important for me is to keep on working," he told AS.
"It's up to FIFA to make the decision. The decision to play for Spain has already been made.
"Spain has given me everything and if I can play for the national team I will do it as well as I can."
Brazil's FA vice-president Marco Polo del Nero told Estado de Sao Paulo over the weekend that they would not make any protest.
"The Brazilian FA believes in free will, if a player wants to play here or there, it will not be this organisation that will say he can't," he said.
Meanwhile, Swansea striker Michu admits he is thrilled after his unexpected call-up by the world and European champions.
Michu was summoned by Vicente del Bosque for the upcoming World Cup qualifying games against Belarus and Georgia after Atletico Madrid striker David Villa was forced to pull out through injury.
The 27-year-old forward has not represented Spain at any level yet but is determined to make the most of this chance to try to impress Del Bosque ahead of next year's World Cup in Brazil.
"Every Spanish footballer dreams of this and it's so difficult. Few people can wear the shirt of the best team in the world," Michu said.
"There are a lot of players missing, but there are great players in the squad. Let's see if fortune is with me and I can play, although I'm already grateful to be called up.
"It's the maximum to which a footballer can aspire. The national team is the best in the world, it's a privilege.
"I'm enjoying it like a kid, these are the best players in the world and it will be complicated, but I'll try to take advantage of the opportunity."
