A former top referee in Italy has spoken out in favor of using
video technology during matches.
Pierluigi Collina told Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview
published Tuesday that "things cannot go on like this."
Collina was quoted as saying that "we might as well use the
technology, otherwise the referee remains alone in having to judge
with his own eyes while all the others will be able to evaluate his
decisions with increasingly perfect tools."
Calls for the use of video technology in football have
increased in recent weeks after a handball during a playoff match
helped France qualify for the World Cup at the expense of Ireland.
