It took America 69 minutes to break down their lowly opponents but Raul Jimenez eventually made the breakthrough and Luis Rey bagged the second just three minutes later.

Second-placed Leon maintained the pressure on the leaders with a 3-1 win over Puebla.

Rafael Marquez opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 16th minute but was sent off 11 minutes later before Matias Alustiza equalised with a penalty of his own.

Toluca sit eight points behind the leaders following a 2-1 away win over 10-man Tigres Monterrey.

Wilson Mathias put the visitors ahead two minutes before the break and Tigres' Jose Torres was sent off just a minute later.

The home side got back in it, though, as Anselmo Juninho equalised but substitute Pablo Velazquez won it for Toluca 10 minutes from time.

Goals either side of half-time saw Cruz Azul come from behind to win 2-1 at Atlas.

Arturo Gonzalez grabbed the opener after 11 minutes but goals from Mariano Pavone (44) and Joao Rojas (48) handed the visitors victory.

Atlante also had to come from a goal behind as they beat Monterrey 2-1.

Jesus Zavala handed Monterrey an early lead but they were undone by second-half goals from Walter Erviti and Alberto Garcia.

In the day's remaining game, nine-man Veracruz grabbed a late equaliser to draw 1-1 with Pachuca.

Daniel Arreola put Pachua ahead in the 72nd minute before Leiton Jimenez was sent off for the visitors.

Cristian Borja then snatched a point with a minute remaining before Jehu Chiapas was dismissed off shortly after.
