Club America capture elusive 12th league title, defeat Tigres UANL
Club America won its 12th league title on Sunday, overtaking Chivas as Mexico's most successful club. Las Aguilas defeated Tigres UANL 3-0 in front of 100,000 fans in the Estadio Azteca, securing a 3-1 victory on aggregate.
Michael Arroyo, Pablo Aguilar and Oribe Peralta got the goals for America against Tigres, which received three red cards in the second half as its 15-game unbeaten streak came to a bitter end. Arroyo opened the scoring in the 36th minute. The Ecuadorian pounced on a misplaced pass in midfield from Tigres' Damian Alvarez, burst past Hugo Ayala and struck a shot inside 'keeper Nahuel Guzman's near post.
America attacked from the start, with Antonio Mohamed including Arroyo, Peralta and Martin Zuniga in an offensive lineup, but Tigres appeared comfortable until the error allowed Arroyo in.
In the second half, it all went wrong for Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti's side.
America took control of the game after a timid first 45 minutes -- disrupted regularly by a green laser pen shone from the crowd at Tigres players -- and started to pile pressure on. Paraguayan Pablo Aguilar converted a header in the 61st minute to put America ahead on aggregate, before Hernan Burbano was sent off less than a minute after coming onto the field for fouling Miguel Layun, who was running through on goal.
Damien Alvarez swung his arm at America defender Ventura Alvarado in the 67th minute to reduce Tigres to nine players, with 'keeper Guzman following him into the dressing room when he was shown his second yellow five minutes later. Peralta finished the scoring and secured the result in the 78th, with a sweet finish from the edge of the penalty area.
Despite the result, America coach Antonio Mohamed is set to leave the club, with the ownership not renewing his contract.
