Clarence Seedorf is facing a suspension of up to 12 matches in Brazil after being red carded for leaving the field the wrong way following a substitution in the Rio de Janeiro state championship last weekend.

Brazil's sports tribunal charged the Dutch midfielder with unethical behavior and being disrespectful to the referee during the incident in Botafogo's 2-1 win over Madureira on Sunday.

Seedorf was heading toward Botafogo's bench in stoppage time when the referee stopped him and pointed toward the nearest sideline to save time, but Seedorf refused and left the other way.

Referee Philip Georg Bennet said in his post-match report that Seedorf called his decision a joke, and that the player said he would leave ''anywhere he wanted.''
