Carrick backs Van der Sar to go on
Van der Sar, who turned 40 this week, recently spoke of his determination to win further Premier League and Champions League titles with United. Some have assumed the former Holland international has spoken of that double target as a glorious career swansong for next May but Carrick can see him playing on. "It's a great achievement," said Carrick, when asked about the Dutchman's longevity by the club's website. "There are goalkeepers down the years who have played a lot later into their careers than outfield players, but to do it at this level and at this club is some going. And it doesn't seem like he's letting up any time soon." Van der Sar first won the Champions League with Ajax in 1995 before moving on to Juventus and then Fulham. He joined United in 2005 and finally ended manager Sir Alex Ferguson's long search for a reliable successor to Peter Schmeichel, who left the club in 1999, and won another European title in 2008. With Van der Sar's contracts reviewed by the season, that search will begin again in the not-too-distant future but the player himself is not easing up yet. "We want to get the Premier League title back, that's for sure," said Van der Sar earlier this week. "We narrowly missed out last season, although we had loads of injuries and lost too many games. I think that's the priority. "And of course we went out of Europe too early last season, so that has to be one of the focus points. "When I was younger, I thought maybe I would finish in my mid-30s, but that's a normal time to be thinking about it when you are younger and for players at this level. "That would have been the obvious time to finish, but I only came to United late in my career and maybe that's why I'm still enjoying it." United return to Champions League action on Tuesday as they travel to Turkey to take on Bursaspor. United won 1-0 when the sides met at Old Trafford last week and, with seven points from their three games in Group C, can take a huge step towards qualification by repeating the victory. Bursaspor, making their debut in the competition after winning the Turkish league for the first time last season, have lost all three of their games so far. United have won seven of their last eight away Champions League matches, the only blip being a last-minute defeat to Bayern Munich in last season's quarter-finals. Ferguson's men were last in Turkey a year ago when they beat Besiktas 1-0, also in a group stage match.
