Campbell, who signed for the Black Cats from Manchester United in 2003, has been recovering from cruciate ligament damage since suffering the injury against Manchester City in August. The 23-year-old is not expected to be back in competitive action until the new year and concedes the spell on the sidelines has been hard to cope with. "When I went home after the game it didn't feel too bad," he told the club's official website. "The scan wasn't too bad either, but when I had it the doctor said I would be out for six months and it really hit me that night. "That was probably the lowest point of my career but I just had to sweep it under the carpet and get on with it. You don't get better by dwelling on things."
