Burnley promoted to Premier League with win over Wigan

LONDON (AP) -- Burnley has secured promotion to the Premier League, returning to England's top flight for the first time since 2010.

Burnley beat Wigan 2-0 on Monday to secure a top-two finish the second-tier League Championship, joining Leicester in getting automatic promotion to the Premier League. Ashley Barnes and Michael Kightly scored in the first half as Burnley stayed eight points ahead of third-place Derby with just two rounds to go.

Burnley was also promoted in 2009, returning to the top flight for the first time in 33 years, but was relegated back into the Championship after a single season.

With a population of less than 90,000, Burnley will be the smallest town with a Premier League club.

Leicester leads the standings with 93 points, four ahead of Burnley.
