Brazilian player kidnapped on his way to practice

Brazilian soccer club Botafogo says one of its players was kidnapped and released unharmed before a practice session in Rio de Janeiro.

The club says midfielder Somalia was briefly abducted on his way to the Engenhao stadium in the city's north side.

Details of what happened were not immediately available and police were still investigating the case.

Some local media reported money and a watch were stolen from the player.

Kidnappings in which gang members briefly abduct victims and force them to withdraw money from automatic teller machines are not uncommon in Brazil's big cities.

Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympics. Brazil also will host the 2014 World Cup.
