Blackpool scrape a point in 0-0 draw with Stoke
Blackpool held on for a 0-0 draw at home to Stoke City on Saturday that kept it narrowly above the Premier League relegation zone with three games to play.
Ian Holloway's side, which returned to English football's top division this season, created little at Bloomfield Road and were lucky to escape with a point after Stoke striker Kenwyne Jones missed an open goal in first-half injury time.
Blackpool was also indebted to Everton's equaliser in its 1-1 draw at struggling Wigan Athletic, a result that left Wigan third from bottom and Blackpool in 17th place.
Blackpool and Wigan are both on 35 points from 35 matches but Blackpool has a superior goal difference of one.
''We've lost our record of scoring in every home game but I cannot fault the effort of the lads,'' Holloway said.
''That's as good as we've been defensively. Let's see what we can do at Tottenham next week. Every game now is a cup final, and let's see if we can stay in this wonderful division.''
Blackpool has a tough run-in: away at Tottenham, home to Bolton, and away to Manchester United.
The home side's best chance Saturday fell to Matt Phillips, who was denied by Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic from close range.
Jones should have put the FA Cup finalist ahead just before the break but, after rounding Blackpool keeper Matt Gilks, the former Sunderland striker somehow shot wide.
Tony Pulis, the Stoke manager, said: ''Strikers will score great goals and sometimes they will miss chances everyone expects them to put away. We've played really well in the second half and did well on a bumpy pitch. It's a shame we could not pick up three points today.''
Stoke is in 10th place with 43 points.
