Birmingham made three signings on Tuesday's final day of the transfer window, bringing in Alexander Hleb from Barcelona, Martin Jiranek from Spartak Moscow and Jean Beausejour from Club America.

Hleb, who has previously played in the Premier League with Arsenal, joined on a season-long loan deal from Spanish champion Barcelona. The Belarus midfielder spent last season on loan at Stuttgart.

''Hleb is a top quality player - one who at one stage we'd only actually dreamed about, really,'' Birmingham manager Alex McLeish said. ''Over the past year or so, we have talked about him but with no real belief we could get him. We decided to give it a try and towards the end of the window we found out it might be possible.

''He is an extremely creative type who is skillful, a great dribbler and has an excellent touch and great feet.''

Jiranek signed for an undisclosed fee on a one-year deal. He will compete for a starting place with first-choice center backs Roger Johnson and Scott Dann.

The 26-year-old Beausejour joined on a three-year deal.

''Beausejour is an excellent, left-sided midfielder who had a tremendous World Cup with Chile,'' McLeish said. ''He is strong and quick with the ability to beat his man and get crosses in.''
