The Australian is to undergo a scan on the problem that forced him off after 23 minutes of Tuesday's 2-1 defeat at Birmingham.
It is almost certain the 30-year-old will miss the visit of Spurs to Ewood Park, but beyond that is uncertain.
"I don't know what it was. He was feeling okay before the game, there were no problems," said Allardyce in the Lancashire Telegraph.
"It is a shame, it was a cold night two days after the Hull match. These things happen."
Fellow Australian Vince Grella, however, is poised to return after missing the game at St Andrews with a thigh problem.
