Benfica withstands Lyon comeback to win 4-3
Fabio Coentrao scored twice as Benfica beat Lyon 4-3 in the Champions League on Tuesday, ending the French club's perfect record in Group B and keeping alive the Portuguese champions' hopes of advancing to the next stage.
Alan Kardec set Benfica on its way in the 20th minute, heading in a cross by Carlos Martins for his first Champions League goal.
Martins, who provided the assists for all Benfica's goals, set up Coentrao - with a spectacular volley at the back post - and then Javi Garcia to put the hosts 3-0 up at half-time.
A deft lob by Coentrao, a standout left back for Portugal at the World Cup in South Africa, made it 4-0 in the 68th minute.
Benfica paid the price for easing off in the final stages as Lyon launched its comeback with late goals by Yoann Gourcuff, Bafetimbi Gomis and Dejan Lovren.
The result leaves Lyon on nine points and Benfica six.
''Things weren't looking good at 3-0 down, it was important to reduce the deficit because head-to-head goal average is important and now we're ahead (of Benfica) on that,'' Lyon coach Claude Puel said. ''At least we did that, and I'm happy with how we responded.''
Lyon was coming off three straight wins in the tournament, while Benfica recorded its second victory. The Portuguese side lost 2-0 in Lyon two weeks ago.
Lyon, which is floundering in ninth place in the French league and was jeered by fans last weekend, made a bright start with Michel Bastos on the right linking up dangerously with Jimmy Briand in the center of attack. Briand struck a bicycle kick over the Benfica bar in the 28th.
