Andrea Barzagli has been ruled out of Italy's friendly meeting with Nigeria with a thigh injury, his club Juventus have confirmed.

The 32-year-old defender was on Friday night replaced by Angelo Ogbonna during Italy's 1-1 draw with Germany at San Siro and returned to Turin to undergo medical tests under the supervision of the reigning Serie A champions.

A statement published on juventus.com read: "Andrea Barzagli has undergone an MRI scan (on Sunday) afternoon in Turin which has revealed a pectineus muscle strain.

"The extent of the injury will be assessed over the coming days."

While Barzagli will not earn his 47th Italy cap against Nigeria at Craven Cottage in London, his early withdrawal from Cesare Prandelli's squad will allow Juventus to monitor his recovery first hand.

Juve will hope their centre-back - a key figure in two consecutive title-winning campaigns - can recover in time to face Livorno next Sunday as the Bianconeri look to close the one-point gap on league leaders Roma.
