Baker pens new Villa deal
Finland coach Mixu Paatelainen feels his side are going into their World Cup qualifying double-header with Belarus over the next few days strengthened by the shock draw they pulled off in Spain in their last Group I match.
Paatelainen's men are bottom of the group but have only played three times and secured the latest of their two points to date in unlikely circumstances, with Teemu Pukki's equaliser ensuring the all-conquering Spanish were held 1-1 in Gijon in March.
Achieving that result is something Paatelainen regards as another important step forward for his team as they "weld together".
Speaking ahead of the games on Friday night at home and then on Tuesday away against Belarus - who have played a match more than Finland and are a point and a place better off - Paatelainen said: "How it is displayed, it is hard to say.
"But we now know that we are able to rise from a losing position to secure a draw against one of the world's best teams at an away ground."
Finland employed thoroughly defensive tactics against Spain, and Paatelainen added: "Of course, we will not always play with such a strategy.
"But it is there in your back pocket, and fully usable.
"Little by little, these are small bits and pieces that are needed for a team to weld together and develop."
While he is certainly targeting victory in tomorrow's contest in Helsinki, Paatelainen was also keen to point out that Belarus are ranked higher in the world than Finland, and he is anticipating a testing assignment.
"They have very high-quality individuals, and a very aggressive team," Paatelainen said.
"Our goal tomorrow is to win the match, but it will not be easy.
"We're up against really high-quality opposition who will put up really tough resistance."
Spain are currently top of Group I on 11 points, one point ahead of second-placed France, while Georgia are third on four. All three sides have played five times.
The 22-year-old, who was an academy graduate at Villa, made 30 appearances for the first team last season.
"I'm really happy to have signed and for my future to be with Villa," said Baker.
"It's an exciting time and, because I've come through the academy as well, it's something that's really special to me, something that hopefully I can use as an inspiration in the future.
"We were probably one of the youngest squads in the Premier League last season and we felt that we got stronger and stronger as the season went on.
"The fans could see the progress we were making and they got behind us really strongly. That was felt very keenly by the players.
"Hopefully, next season we can keep improving and we can be even better. I think things are in place that we can really do that."
Villa manager Paul Lambert says Baker is already an integral part of their squad.
"For any player here at Aston Villa, the goal is always to strive to be the best you can and to keep improving as an individual within the team," Lambert said.
"Nathan has demonstrated courage and real willing and he's contributed to the team and these qualities will underpin his efforts going into the new season."
