Baggies boss backs Carson to respond

The Baggies captain was at fault for Chelsea's first goal and had to pick the ball out of the net on another five occasions as the newly-promoted side began their campaign with a 6-0 drubbing at Stamford Bridge. Di Matteo said: "He is a strong character and I am sure he will want to make it up to the team and everybody. "If you look at the weekend, there were quite a few mistakes by goalkeepers. "When a goalkeeper makes a mistake then most of the time it's a goal, but he made a lot of saves for us last season and won us a lot of points and I'm sure he will pay us back. "As a captain you have certain responsibilities within the dressing room as well as yourself and I am sure he will rise to the occasion. He will be okay." Di Matteo has called for his players to respond in the right way to their sobering experience at the home of the champions by putting up a fight against Sunderland. The Baggies have the added motivation of trying to extend an unbeaten home run that stretches back to a 3-1 loss against Nottingham Forest in early January. "There is nothing easy but we have to try our best and I want the team to show a reaction to Saturday," continued Di Matteo. "I want them to play well, try hard and give us a chance to be able to win a game. "The home record is good, but it is a different league. We have to do well, and we want to do well, by starting off our season at home well. "The supporters can make it easier against Sunderland. Our fans have been magnificent, all last year, since I have been here they've been fantastic. "I think we have repaid them as well with some great games, and results last season." Di Matteo, meanwhile, refused to confirm whether he will recall central defender Jonas Olsson, who was a virtual ever-present last season but had to make do with a place on the bench against Chelsea, with new signing Pablo Ibanez and Gabriel Tamas preferred. The Baggies boss said: "It was very difficult for me because he is a very good player for us. But I have to make decisions and we can only play with 11. "If we have a squad these things are going to happen, but I always say to the players that the goal for us at the end is to be successful as a team. "If sometimes you don't play, you still have to encourage the other players because it can happen to anybody that one day you are on the bench. He has been training well and he is a strong character so we will see what happens on Saturday." Two players who will not be in contention for places in the squad are Ishmael Miller and Joe Mattock, who both picked up injuries in training this week and have been ruled out for up to a month. Defender Mattock is on crutches after twisting his ankle while striker Miller, who has missed much of the last two seasons with knee problems, has a thigh strain. Striker Reuben Reid, meanwhile, has joined Walsall on a five-month loan deal.
