Arshavin left out of Russia squad to face US
Russia coach Fabio Capello left former captain Andrei Arshavin out of a 26-player squad named Tuesday to face the United States in a friendly next week.
Capello gave first call-ups to under-21 team regulars Denis Cheryshev, a midfielder with Real Madrid, and forward Fyodor Smolov, who is on loan at Anzhi Makhachkala from Dynamo Moscow.
Arshavin and fellow experienced forwards Pavel Pogrebnyak and Roman Pavlyuchenko have been frozen out by Capello during the team's perfect four-win start in 2014 World Cup qualifying.
Russia faces a U.S. team coached by Jurgen Klinsmann on Nov. 14 in Krasnodar, the southern city which was dropped as a potential 2018 World Cup host city in September.
