Racing moved into fourth spot in the Argentine league standings Saturday after two goals from Teofilo Gutierrez helped secure a 3-0 win against Newell's Old Boys.
Argentinos Juniors is up to fifth after a 2-1 victory at San Lorenzo, while Gimnasia won 2-0 against Banfield, All Boys downed Arsenal 1-0 and Colon won 3-0 against Huracan.
Fixtures in the Clausura tournament continue Sunday, including the ''superclasico'' match between Boca Juniors and River Plate at Boca's Bombonera stadium.
League leader Velez Sarsfield, which has 27 points from 13 matches, also plays Sunday, at Lanus.
On Friday, second-placed Godoy Cruz had a 2-0 home win against Quilmes to move within a point of Velez.
In a tightly packed league, Olimpo, Racing, Argentinos and River Plate follow with 22 points each, while Boca is back in 12th spot on 18.
Gutierrez slid home the opening goal for Racing against Newell's from Patricio Toranzo's pass in the 16th minute and Toranzo supplied the second with a cross for Aveldano to head home in the 35th.
Gutierrez nailed down the comfortable win with a chipped finish after racing through the porous Newell's defense in the 86th.
Argentinos Juniors is behind Racing only on goal difference after a 2-1 win at San Lorenzo. Emilio Hernandez opened the scoring in the seventh minute after racing onto a pass from Ciro Rius, rounding goalkeeper Pablo Migliore and scooping the ball into the net from a tight angle.
Leandro Romagnoli hit a rising left-footed shot from outside the box to equalize in the 31st, but German Basualdo got the winner just before half time with a chipped finish over Migliore following a mix-up in the San Lorenzo defense.
Elsewhere, Gimnasia boosted its hopes of avoiding relegation after Claudio Graf and Alejandro Capurro scored either side of half time in a 2-0 victory against Banfield.
Also Saturday, Emanuel Gigliotti scored the winner to move All Boys into 11th position after a 1-0 win against Arsenal, while Damian Diaz scored two goals and Esteban Fuertes got another as Colon racked up three first-half goals to beat Huracan.
