Argentine League Roundup, Nov. 28
Estudiantes defeated Independiente 2-1 on Sunday to move closer to clinching the Argentina Apertura tournament with three rounds remaining.
Gaston Fernandez scored the winner for Estudiantes, which improved to 36 points, five more than Velez. Velez plays Tigre on Tuesday.
In Sunday's two other matches, Newell's Old Boys beat Boca Juniors 1-0 after a goal from Luis Rodriguez in the 86th, while River Plate defeated Olimpo 1-0 with a 31st-minute header by Adalberto Roman. With the win, River Plate moves temporarily out of the relegation zone.
Juan Pablo Pereyra gave Estudiantes a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, but Nicolas Martinez equalized in the 46th. Fernandez's winner came from a shot outside the area to put the championship title in sight.
"This is just another victory," Estudiantes playmaker Juan Sebastian Veron said. "We still have a ways to go to decide the championship. These are important points, nothing more."
Estudiantes has three games remaining, against Argentinos Juniors, River Plate and Arsenal. Velez has Tigre, Godoy Cruz, Huracan and Racing.
Boca's loss left it a long way off the pace, with 20 points in 16 games. Newell's improved to 25 points in 16.
It was a key victory for River Plate, which moved out of the drop zone. Relegation in Argentina is determined on results over three seasons. The last two seasons have been poor, although Sunday's win moves River to 25 points in 16 matches and firmly into the top third of the standings.
River could fall into danger again if Huracan defeats Lanus in a Monday game. In another match on Monday, Argentinos Juniors play Colon. In a lone match on Tuesday, Velez faces Tigre.
