Mariano Pavone scored in the final minutes Sunday to give River Plate a 1-0 victory over Independiente and a share of the Argentina's Clausura tournament lead with Olimpo.

Pavone broke down the left side, got around keeper Hilario Navarro, and stroked the ball into the open net in the 89th minute.

''We are just taking it game by game and not trying to go crazy,'' Pavone said, downplaying his goal.

River outplayed Independiente and deserved the three points, giving the side a share of the lead with seven points from three matches.

In other matches Sunday, Banfield defeated defending champion Estudiantes 1-0 and Argentinos Juniors drew 1-1 with Velez Sarsfield.

Defending champion Estudiantes dropped their first points of the season, losing to Banfield after a 61st-minute header by Jorge Achucarro.

Estudiantes won its first two matches in the new Clausura season, but seldom looked threatening against Banfield.

Achucarro scored with a spectacular header, slipping between two Estudiantes defenders to find the net from eight meters (yards).

''It is a big victory because Estudiantes are very difficult to beat at home,'' Banfield's Jonathan Gomez said.

Estudiantes has two points more than Banfield.

Argentinos Juniors needed Frano Niell's 68th-minute header from a corner to draw with Velez Sarsfield, the runner-up in the Apertura season. David Ramirez gave Velez a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.

Racing and Lanus both won Saturday to improve to six points from three matches.

Jonathan Bottinelli's header gave San Lorenzo a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of the derby match with Racing. But Teofilo Gutierrez equalized for Racing with a diving header in the 44th, and he scored the decider in the 55th, this time chipping in from close-range.

Lanus defeated Quilmes 2-1 with two first-half goals by Diego Valeri.

Boca Juniors managed only a scoreless draw with All Boys.

All Boys goalkeeper Nicolas Cambiasso made a handful of great saves to keep the match scoreless in the first half.

However, two minutes into first-half injury time, Boca appeared to have scored after a goal-mouth scramble but referee Sergio Pezzotta disallowed the goal by Nicolas Colazo.

All Boys played a man short after Juan Pablo Rodriquez was shown a red card in the 84th.

New Boca coach Julio Cesar Falcioni is sure to be criticized for leaving star midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme out of his squad. Riquelme, who was injured two weeks ago, said he was ready to play but was overlooked by Falcioni.

On Friday, Olimpo drew 3-3 with Godoy Cruz and Gimnasia defeated Colon 3-1.

On Monday, it's Huracan against Arsenal, while Tigre playing Newell's Old Boys to wrap up the third round.
