World Cup-winning goalkeeper Nery Pumpido has been hired as coach of the Argentine club Godoy Cruz. He replaces Uruguayan coach Jorge Da Silva.

The team says Pumpido will lead the Mendoza-based club in the Clausura tournament and Copa Libertadores.

Pumpido played on the Argentine team that won the 1986 World Cup. He has coached previously in Argentina with Union de Santa Fe and Newell's Old Boys, and had spells in Mexico with UANL Tigres and in Paraguay with Olimpia.

He won the Libertadores, South America's top club competition, with Olimpia in 2002.
