America and Guadalajara, the two biggest clubs in Mexican football, got off to slow starts Saturday on the opening weekend of the Mexican Apertura tournament.

America lost 3-0 at Pachuca and Guadalajara drew 0-0 at home against Puebla. In other matches on Saturday, Jaguares and Necaxa drew 1-1, Queretaro won 1-0 at Tigres, Santos defeated Atlante 4-1, and San Luis and Monterrey drew 1-1.

Israel Martinez gave Pachuca a 1-0 lead with an own-goal, and Edgar Benitez then scored twice - in the 42nd and 55th - to seal the victory.

Guadalajara was unable to break down Puebla, suggesting it will miss Manchester United-bound striker Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez.

Monterrey's goal came from Humberto Suazo in the 63rd, but Wilmer Alexander equalized in the 70th for San Luis.

In Cancun, Christian Benitez scored twice in Santos' 4-1 victory over Atlante.

On Friday, Cruz Azul defeated Estudiantes 3-0 in the first match of the new Apertura tournament.

On Sunday, Morelia takes on Atlas and Pumas hosts Toluca.
