Almeria fired coach Juan Manuel Lillo on Saturday after its record 8-0 defeat to Barcelona.

The club said on its website the decision was taken right after the match at Juegos Mediterraneos Stadium due to ''the poor results in the last rounds of the championship.''

The defeat was Almeria's worst in club history, and it matched the biggest away win by any club in league history. Barcelona set the original record with an 8-0 win at Las Palmas in 1959.

Lillo replaced Hugo Sanchez last season and kept Almeria in topflight football.
